A documentary Film

For many of us our parents encourage us to attend college and get a higher education so that we can have a choice of what we would like for ourselves in life an not just have to settle for what we can get. When i first when to college I was filled with the idea when I got out I’d have a leg up on the rest of the world, that I’d have to beat employers off with a stick and choosing a my career would be like choosing which gift to first unwrap at christmas; exciting, somewhat expected, and always with careful and thoughtful deliberation. A year out of school and I quickly found out that was not the case at all. Instead of exploring new areas and growing into adult hood I found myself back in my old room and in many ways back into adolescence. Now don’t get me wrong I would not change my college experience for anything, not only was I expose to classes of people I wouldn’t normally interact with and create strong bonds and important relationships, college helped me view the world beyond myself, brought my attitude and intelligence to a higher level, and help form me into a daring, risk taking, creative person. Still I wish my income could reflect those four years that help me grow so much.  Though I understand that times are tough and I am not the only person with such ‘after college shock’ and what’s helping me get through this difficult time for our nation is in fact my background in higher education.  I’m realizing that to be an adult is to tackle responsibilities that may not make you happy  while still pursuing that thing that motivates you.

The link above is a link to my blog for a documentary film I’m working on about this very subject. Titled: Overqualified At first this film was going to be a broad documentary about what it means to be a college graduate in todays economy but as things evolved it has become more to focus about a certain individual named Rachel. Rachel graduated top of her class in both high school and college, she is driven, smart, articulate and struggling, like may of us are.  I won’t go into more detail because that is what the blog is for. If you have the time check it out, give me some feed back and hey if you feel like supporting a local filmmaker and fellow black bear, donate a dollar or two.

Lewiston/Auburn is hosting it’s first ever film festival sponsored by various local establishments as well as MPBN. This is a great opportunity for students to get their work shown and be apart of bringing exposure and culture to a part of Maine that is definitely on the raise as far as the arts go. Being a past student of the Camden film fest I can attest that there are some very talented filmmakers in the UMaine community, here is your chance to get your film shown and maybe open up some future opportunities.

With more and more states introducing restrictions on cell phone use while driving it only make sense that someone would recognize that human beings are creatures of habit and will multi-task at high speeds despite the laws then develop a tool so that users can safely multitask.  As always, the media juggernaut Google saw this as an opportunity of expansion, but rather then develop has free texting, (they know how attached you are to your precious little pocket jockey) Google is looking to the future, going above and beyond to create a hands-free car.  I just ask, is it overkill?

Today at 10am I went to shoot a Haiku at a local CVS with a nice young girl name Strawberry (yes that is really her name). Strawberry is a friend of another young man with who I recorded a poem with, I met him at while he was working at Bullmoose and I was getting some hot tracks.  He was telling some friends of his about his Haiku and how while filming we had both realized that we were both former Blackbears, when Strawberry heard about the project she was intrigued, when she heard my name she was even more intrigued! Apparently she had recognized my name from a former job I once had at a movie theatre when I was about 17, (apparently I make quite an impression on people). A few days later Strawberry contacted me and we set up a time go meet and film her poem.

After I left Strawberry I headed over to the local Humane Society. I usually like to go there once ever-other week or so and walk one of the sheltered dogs, so they kind of know me there. I talked to the head directer and explained to him about my project, I talk with him about community, and creativity, about having a special message that’s important to him or his staff.

I left the Humane Society and walked just a few yards down the street to a small church that on the outside looked like an oversized ice fishing house, but on the inside was magnificent. It was the sanctuary of latino christian parish; I was totally unaware that Lewiston ever had a strong latino community let along their own parish. Joey, an expert in marketing thought that this would be a wonderful opportunity to send a message of love and christianity and wanted to offer the opportunity to his whole parish. Meetings need to be made.

I recently began working for mulit-media artist and Bates professor William Pope L. At the start of the summer I applied for an artist assistant and project manager position for Pope L. he recently received a fellowship grant to move his life work to a gallery in Chicago. I, among a few others are assisting him in this daunting task.  Part of this job requires me to sort through work produced over 40 years and the more I saw the more surprised I became, surprised at the fact that an extremely accomplished, progressive, multi-media, artist, living in Maine had never come up at my time atUMO.  Popes work spans from video art, installations, abstract drawings, and public performances.  Pope L.’s work could be compared with the Likes of Felix Gonzalez-Torres with a reminder of Happenings of the early 60′s. It’s an unusual job but a truly unique and interesting one, I must be extremely versatile and self thinking. Seeing work such as Pope L.s is quite inspiring and I’m learning a lot both artistically and professionally. If anyone gets some time I suggest you check out some of his work.

Recently got to see some fantastic work coming from the NMD department capstone class. Would like to specifically note The Everyday Maine documentary project by new media student Ben Brazier which is a series of 1 minute audio and still documentaries about various people throughout Maine.

This sparked me to start checking out job opportunities in the documentary film field and i came across this: http://www.documentary.org/community/IDA-resources/jobs

Think this would be useful to those new media students (such as myself) who couldn’t code themselves out of a box, or ever write a code that made a box for that matter and let people know that what we learn in New Media is more then graphic design and webpage development.

This would be especially useful for anyone who HAS taken or WILL be taking the Camden International Film Festival class next year.

I’m starting a project inspired by the ever evolvement of social networking sites such as facebook and twitter. Status Updates have developed from rhetorical information to full on debates, some spanning several paragraphs. But by being hosted on a public platform in which virtually anyone can let their opinion be known these threads can become tough to intemperate very quickly. Multiple conversations with separate meanings often appear in the same thread, making interpretation of the dialog difficult to follow.

This project is intended to exploit that fact and use it as a platform of creativity. It is also a question as to who owns the content on a public domain? If someone uses something you freely post for their own benefit are those people entitled to it? Let us know your opinion at [ http://strangestatus.wordpress.com/category/inspiration/ ]STRANGE STATUS.com
