Wong Baker Pain Scale FacesI’m all for designing with simplicity in mind. But when I was shown this sign by a Bangor ER triage nurse after breaking a crown off my molar, I couldn’t help noticing that the picture had a couple of names in the “credits.”

Which left me with two questions: 1) Did both scientists get tenure as a result of creating this innovative “pain scale”? And 2) did this clever pair go on to create the US government’s color-coded Terror Threat Levels?

I reproduce the following link without comment:

  1. While I agree that the design leaves quite a bit to be desired, it is amazing to consider that no cohesive universal pain indication scale was in place before this was created in 2001 – and even now in 2010 it is still not fully implemented. Unfortunately, I have seen this way too often, but I have come to realize that although the faces are quite ugly, when you are in #10 pain that sad crying face that “hurts as much as you can imagine, although you don’t have to be crying to feel this bad.”, seems to be about the right amount of design you can handle. Speaking of good design however, when will they bring back the Candy Stripers?http://tinypineapple.com/nurses/candy-stripers/
